During an first day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an audacious commencement to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The young democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A opportunity of this kind comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring counsel to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my ideals for worry of being called radical,” he said to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these programs may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Challenges

The new mayor must contend with concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director resigned over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has sought to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly productive.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
