Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Brilliance in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had conceded 10 goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their latest protest in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Unraveling?

Had their campaign coming unstitched, or did there exist a binding element keeping it intact to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach in the summer transfer window, only for him admitted that the board had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were about to receive for accounting issues. Reports that he might quit were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic in their performances as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. At any given moment, observers have struggled to ascertain if they're getting better or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Presence

A single player kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this season. He spent the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were advocating for him to remain there for another season. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

He signed in the first place under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."

Finding His True Position

Maybe Sarri was persistently working to determine the nature of his skill set. Originally described as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
