At least thirteen individuals killed and 98 injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” declared the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, surpassing expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party demanded an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
